The Sushi Experience A hands-on Sushi Workshop with Hiroko Shimbo
Sushi is now a world-food available everywhere around the globe from delis to high-end restaurants and now it can be made in home kitchens as well. How and why did this food, formerly a unique culinary curiosity of Japan, reach this position? What accounts for its amazing popularity? Hiroko Shimbo, an expert on Japanese cuisine, recent author of, The Sushi Experience, a James Beard Foundation Asian Cookbook nominee, culinary consultant and trained sushi chef tells this fascinating story and demonstrates the making of three styles of sushi, several of which can easily be made in a home kitchen with readily available ingredients. This immediately follows fun and delicious hands-on sushi making by the students.
Hiroko will present the colorful history and cultural background of sushi. She will also provide tips and suggestions for ordering sushi at a favorite restaurant. Even traditional sushi-dining etiquette will be described. This information-packed hands-on workshop concludes with the best part saved for the last: a wonderful tasting of all of the sushi prepared by the students during the class.
Hiroko's demonstration covers preparation of perfect sushi rice and pickled ginger; correct cutting of sushi fish into sushi slices; making Japanese omelets; preparation of inside-out rolls; preparation of tossed sushi; and, preparation of nigiri-zushi.
