Dear Barbara,
As the summer starts to wind down, we are into the simplest and best of things, starting with Dan Winan's lovely recipe.
Please check out the upcoming fundraiser for the Portland Public Market - Portland's Best Food Party of the Year. This is a subject that is very near and dear to us, and we urge you to learn more about it and get involved.
We start our sidewalk sale here in the Pearl today. This is the one time to stock up your kitchen withn all those things you've been meaning to buy but have put off all summer. Our prices are aggressive as we need to make way for the Fall items that are coming in. We have especially good deals on wine and cookbooks.
Josie has been in Napa for two months now. We miss her more than we ever imagined but know that she is learning a lot at the CIA and she'll be bringing that knowledge and love of cooking home to us. She is getting into the swing of her days there and is now able to post the occasional blog again. Check out her latest blog posting here.
Here's wishing you a glorious end of summer!

Recipe: Dan's Heirloom Tomato Salad
The simplest of recipes can yield the biggest flavour. Dan Winan's heirloom tomato salad proves the point; nothing could be simpler than this recipe, yet it tastes divine. He uses the best tomatoes from the farmers market, of course, and a good quality balsamic vinegar, and the results are worth it.

Salt of the Month: Maldon
Our chefs love this salt. Its soft white flaky crystals are completely natural, without artificial additives, giving Maldon Sea Salt a distinctive texture and salty flavour that is not like any other salt on the market. Come try it today!

Portand's Food Party of the Year Join us all at Portland's food party of the year and help support the planned Portland Public Market. The market's mission is to operate a daily, year-round, indoor-outdoor venue to showcase our region's bounty, to promote sustainable agricultural practices, to encourage healthy eating, and to provide entrepreneurial opportunities for those who produce and sell the food we eat.
All major food cities in the world boast a year round public farmer's market and it's time for Portland to step up to the plate. Help us make this market happen!

Review: "Adventures of an Italian Food Lover"
by Faith Willinger Judith meets new friends in Italy this month as she reviews Faith WIllinger's latest cookbook.
We love Faith's books and this one is no exception. The recipes are bold and tasty, and the pictures (drawn by Faith's sister) are a delight to behold.
